In amongst the 2.8 million hectares of protected land in Spain’s Andalucia, you’ll find all sorts of natural beauty, from Sierra Nevada in Granada to Sierra de Grazalema in Cádiz, from lush forests and serene rivers and lakes.

For this reason, the best way to experience our remarkable region of Andalusia is to fully inmerse yourself and explore the peaks. The wildlife is just as special; ranging from foxes, boars, badgers, polecats, weasels, beech martens, wildcats and squirrels.

What we’ve aimed to do here is to suggest a handful of the most diverse trails in Málaga region -some easy walks perfect for families and some walks quite challenging for experienced hikers, but all of them showcasing paramount sourts of nature.

The best hiking trails near Málaga are spread all around Sierra de las Nieves, Serranía de Ronda, Costa del Sol, Antequera and Guadalhorce valley too. This article focuses on the best day hikes; on the great walks that you can get done in half a day or a full day near Málaga city.

1. Peak Mijas

One of the best winter hikes near Málaga is walking route Peak Mijas. In particular, the Peak Mijas is home to some of the greatest views in southern Spain. There, a couple of weeks ago we were spoilt with how many stunning sights are on offer.

The list is endless of fascinating walks in Mijas mountains which are enhanced by the wintry weather, but one specific route has been named as one of the Málaga’s most stunning winter hikes.

The Peak Mijas on the Costa del Sol border, is on the bucket list of many local hikers. This trail starts nearby Mijas pueblo, and goes up to an impressive rock formation. The landscape stacks up millions of years in geology, myth and human settlement.

Way up above the hills is the Peak Mijas, a skyscraper of a gritstone pillar that has broken away from the cliff edge to create a dramatic viewpoint. The more you look, the more there is to see.

2. Málaga mountains ‘Montes de Málaga’

Our second choice of the best winter hikes near Málaga to enjoy fresh air for every fitness level lies on the Montes de Málaga, a beautiful Natural Park covering 5,000 hectares, most of them belong to the capital of Málaga.

The maximum altitude stands at 3,400 feet above sea level. The area has an enourmous arboreal vegetation, mainly groves, oak, cork and almond trees.
